David Reid is one of Pollok's most respected and popular members. Learning his golf at West Kilbride where his family was evacuated during the war years of 1941-43, the family returned to Glasgow, young David enrolled at Glasgow High School and joined Haggs Castle golf club as a junior member. Even then he was an exceptional golfer, in 1946, as a boy aged 15 years, while on holiday in Arran, David played the opening holes at Brodick in 1,2,3!! David was runner-up in the Scottish Boys Championship at North Berwick. Clearly an excellent golfer David had an outstanding victory beating Allan Mcgregor, two years his senior, who was then the British Boys Champion. In the austere post war years, the emergence of a young Scottish golfer with immense potential commanded considerable attention, "Boy David beats his Goliath" screamed the Bulletin headlines.
Leaving the junior ranks David joined Pollok in 1950 and, despite his youth comfortably won the Club championship in the following year. He continued his distinguished career playing for Glasgow County and gaining trials for the Walker Cup and Scotland. In the British Amateur at Porthcawl he beat Willie Turnesa, a famous American Walker Cup pl;ayer, at the 20th with a stymie!! He won the Cameron Corbett Vase at Haggs Castle, the McLeod Cup at Old Ranfurly, and the Cumbrae Cup at Millport GC. Along with Dr Frank Deighton, a Walker Cup player, David won the Evening Times foursomes tournament at Ayr Belleisle entering from the '36 Club' now no longer. Interestingly when entering for a competition David was requested to list his clubs, he put down Pollok GC, 32 Club and Locarno! Not an exotic Italian golf club, as you might imagine, but a popular watering hole in Sauchiehall Street. At that time David was a popular and formidable golfer, competing with many well known West of Scotland players. Among them many Scottish Amateur Champions including Reid Jack of Dullatur, British Amateur Champion and Walker Cup player; Hamilton McInally of Bogside a former Captain of the Walker Cup team; Walter McLeod of Old Ranfurly also a Walker Cup player; G B Stevenson of Troon and our own Billy Jack. David became Captain of Pollok in 1980/81 and later Captain of the famous 32 Club. Always a gracious gentleman with a great sense of fun, charm, a vibrant sense of humour and indomitable optimism, David is disarmingly modest of his golfing achievements saying his best game was winning the evening mixed foursomes at Pollok with Christine Leggat, the past Captain's wife!! , David brought great recognition to Pollok, forever known as 'the Boy David' many believe he is Pollok's most distinguished member.. |
